various expression techiques

Some of my sticks arrived broken—are they still usable?
Yes, broken pieces work just as well. Use a short piece on its side for broad areas and a sharp broken edge for detail. Keep pieces in the box so colors stay sorted, and hold sticks near the tip to reduce new breaks.
-
The colors look weak on black paper—how do I make them show up?
Dark paper needs more build-up. Lay down a light base of white or a pale shade first, then add color on top with firmer pressure. Papers with more tooth hold extra layers, so colors stay brighter than on smooth sketch paper.
-
How can I keep pastel dust from getting everywhere?
Work with the paper upright or tilted so dust falls away instead of settling, and tap the drawing gently rather than blowing on it. A tray or newspaper under your work catches loose powder, and a damp cloth cleans hands and tables easily.
-
Why does one stick feel harder than the others?
The outer surface can firm up slightly in storage. Rub the tip on scrap paper or fine sandpaper to expose a fresh layer and it should go on softer. Firmer sticks are also handy for crisp lines and details.
-
Can I sharpen these for fine detail work?
Yes. Gently rub a stick at an angle on fine sandpaper or scrape it with a craft knife to form an edge; a regular pencil sharpener tends to snap soft pastels. Save the shavings to blend in with a cotton swab or tissue.
